Preparing for a Headshot with Tone Stockenstrom Photography

How to Prepare for a Headshot Session

Many of my clients feel nervous being in front of a camera with bright lights, as if they’re suddenly “on the spot.” For many, this can be challenging. My number one priority when creating a headshot is to put you at ease and make you feel comfortable. When you’re relaxed, the images come naturally, and I can capture the real you—not a forced, glossy version.

Clients often ask how to prepare and what to wear. Your headshot should reflect your personality and the industry you represent. A good starting point is to wear a color that makes you feel confident, and it’s always a good idea to bring a backup jacket or a second outfit. I like to provide options, allowing you to try a second look so we can discover which one will create the best image.

Whenever possible, choose solid colors and avoid busy patterns—they help keep the focus on you.

Here is your Quick Headshot Prep Guide

  • Be relaxed – Comfort = natural photos

  • Wear a color you love – Confidence shows

  • Bring a backup outfit – Extra options are great

  • Stick to solids – Avoid busy patterns

  • Groom yourself – Hair, makeup, facial hair neat

  • Rest well – Look fresh and energized

After your headshot session, I will edit the images and provide a private link to your gallery. From there, you can select your two favorite images for retouching. I love meeting people from all walks of life! Each headshot session gives me the chance to connect with you, learn a little about your personality, and capture a portrait that truly reflects who you are.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is hearing clients say, “That was fun,” or “You made the process so easy, and I feel great!” I take pride in creating a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere in front of the camera—so much so that it shows in the images themselves.
